Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
May of 2010!? I think that is a bit ridiculous. This autumn or for the holiday season would be better, I think. Then it also leaves us wondering where the next album's placement is. Will there be a full one in 2010 or will be looking to 2011?

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
My mouth opened wide when I heard the mini-album was going to be released on May 2010. Although it is very good news for us, I was quite worried... It's been less than a year since PS was released, and because of the PS tour, they may not have many time to prepare even a mini album... As I've said in a thread before, preparing a good album does take time, at least two years
However, thanks to many of you, I've now learnt that this mini album contains covers they have done with K'naan and Kanye West, with some new songs, and I'll be more than glad to hear them Moreover, I might not have understood very clearly what Tom said, despite having watched it twice. Maybe it will be released on the 6th anniversary of Hopes and Fears, who knows? *starts to wait impatiently for the mini album*

Didn't they re-recorded YHTMA to sound more like the live version? Would love to see that on the mini album!
OMG yes i remember hearing something about that
cause Kayne loves that keane song

plus single this october !!
There's a single out this October? I hope so- maybe it will be My shadow. Also, does anyone know what film My Shadow is going to be in and when it will be out because it would be sensible to release My Shadow at the same time as the film.
hmm no i don't think its my shadow i think its one of the songs keane did with k'Naan or kayne west

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
Hi! I just wanted to pop in and say that I'm really excited for the mini album. Can't wait for the new songs they made with other artists and I also think hope that The Happy Solider will be on it. After all , remember what Tim said. One of my favourite Keane songs is The Happy Soldier but I read
somewhere that you won't re-release it as your views have changed. If
this is true, I was wondering what the song is about? and how have your
views changed?
From Imyy, UK
Tim replies: That’s not the case. It’s a song about a
soldier being afraid and wondering why he’s off fighting some pointless
war far from his home. I suppose the lyrics are very tongue-in-cheek,
which makes them open to misinterpretation. It was one of the first
songs I wrote and it’s a subject I still return to a lot, for example
in A Bad Dream. I think we may even release it very soon!
it only takes a spark to tear the world apart.

Mmmmmmmmmmm.....single in October..........without an album to go with it i just hope their promotions people get their act together for this, unlike the single releases from PS, what a shambles.........just look at their recent singles chart history.........having said that....i can't wait for some new material to listen to ........

Other than the mini-album, I'd be amazed if there was any full new album before mid-late 2011. No insider info on that, just my own thinking though!
Re. single in October... I'm fairly certain there isn't one. I think what Tom was saying in that interview was that they were initially thinking they'd put out the K'naan track(s) in October as a fairly low-key thing, but that the people around them (record company etc) thought that they were too good to just give a quiet release to... so, they want to do some proper build-up to it and therefore they want to hold it back until next year instead.
Basically, my understanding is that there will be no further public activity for the band between the tour finishing at the end of this month, and the run-up to this mini-album next year. Which reminds me, I should really do a blog entry to sum up the PS era until now, and look ahead to what comes next...

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
Yeh i agree Mart, clearly any talk of october has been scrapped for next May, i'm not expecting something in both.
I also raised an eyebrow about the date of it, I would of thought it would of been perfect to have thrown fans 'a bone' with it a month or 2 after the touring ending like a '' here you go- something to keep you all happy whilst we take time off/ make another record'', so it does seem a bit stop/ start. I guess it's sensible though to put it out there when they all feel like they can promote/ possibly tour it a little bit, especially if its really different, it could turn out well to have that gap rather than it feel like an extention of perfect symmetry.
I wonder what the chances of it just being a digital release? I really hope they release it physically too, even if its just available like that from Km, always nice to have it in your hands.
Another thought that crossed my mind, although could be massively jumping the gun, i wonder about any bonus dvd footage that they might chuck out with it? They've released dvds at the end of both touring cycles so far, no hint of anything like that yet this time around, yet various people have mentioned both band/ crew filming at various places throughout the tour.. south america etc.. They could kill 2 birds with one stone with a mini album/ dvd all in one? Maybe i'm just being over optimistic!?

Which I think would be awful. Close to three years for an album is a rather long time. Not to go on a rant, but I really, really hate the two-year album cycle. It's so crazy how we do less with more.

I'm just hoping the build-up IS "proper". It just feels like to me that a lot of their stuff just goes into the void at this point.

That would be great. Your blog posts are always rather insightful.

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
Writing an album i think depends on the time spent writing.
It seems like Keane are fond of having extended breaks, and from when the finished tour in 07, till when PS was released it was a fairly long time to write an album.
But it depends on how they write. Really an album should take six months or so i think, but then you're talking intensive studio time, Keane have been afforded the luxury of not needing to release an album every year/18 month,(ok so it was roughly two years between the first two, but longer between the UTIS and PS - i cant seem them getting a new album out by the end of next year with this mini album) bands who are on their way up have to work harder, and a new lot of material is more sales, and hopefully a higher profile, several bands i know release an album every year, but i think the moment you are given the chance to take your foot off a little bit, there is a temptation to relax and enjoy your spoils.. not that there's anything wrong with that!
I dont know the process Keane have to go through to get an album released, how much independance they enjoy from the record company. An example i like to use is Phil Collins, he toured most of 1992 with Genesis, and released his album at the end of the next year, if this mini album appears i wonder if it will give Keane a reason not to release an album untill maybe 2011? Because surely there'll be some tour dates with the mini album. So that will take up a few months.. and suddenly its late 2010, or even 2011 before they head back into the studio, for a full album.
I'd rather they didnt return till they had a full album rather than a mini one, but i get the feeling that this is going to be more experimental than PS, and so they dont want to sell it as a Keane album, but more a large EP, so they can release the music without putting them on the next Keane Long Player!
I wonder if they'll bundle it with PS, you know like Coldplay did.

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
I wonder if this "mini" album is the reason there were less b-sides for the PS singles? They were storing them up?
Just a thought that occured.

Re: May 2010 : Keane 'mini' Album
interesting insight on this silent bob, mart and funnyface. i never knew how this whole record/dvd cycle process works in the industry. it must be so different and challenging now since full lenght albums from top artists don't sell in the millions anymore. i read somewhere that even radiohead is a doing mini ep. there's a great article about this in the july 2009 issue of vogue the features some top music execs talking about this very same process and how it doesn't really work anymore because of the digital revolution. mc2d: Keane mixed with Kanye & K'naan. It's going to be a surprise! 3 Ks.... * waits patiently*
i want to hear this too but kanye is acting up again and totally went off on taylor swift at the vmas last night! poor girl. it makes me wonder if keane will feel guilty by association or just get rough and gangster on fellow artists when they come out with the keane/kanye collaboration. lol. can't imagine it but i do think kayne needs to work more on his ego and chill out.
