boardies, groupies, fangirls/boys and technology
i was happy to meet a few of boardies form the forum board recently and it got me thinking about the whole 'boardie' and another term used before all the messageboards and stuff such as 'groupie' which holds another kind of connotation. there's also the fangirl or fanboy label too. how do you all feel about these titles? i am curious because it seems like "the internets" is creating these new identities for music fans. any thoughts?

Re: boardie versus groupie - is there a difference?
Slightly confused on exactly what you are asking
Boardie is someone who posts on the messageboard Groupie is someone who is a creepy stalker and/or goes to unholy/healthy amounts of gigs and is typically lusting after one member and can attempt to do slutty things Groupies can be boardies (as you may have noticed) but not all are just like not all boardies are groupies.
At least, that's how I see it. yawn

okay, i edited it a bit to make it more clear. yeah, my original question may have been a bit obvious (hence, your yawn. lol) but i am just wondering about general thoughts on the titles and if folks see these titles as changing or blurred over time with the advent of messageboards, social networking sites, etc...

With technology you can stalk more and find out more info quicker but idk. Still depends on your mental state. I mean level of fandom.

Re: re: boardies, groupies, fangirls/boys and technology
I think that's an interesting question. Before I got involved on this forum, I used to think of those terms seperately and rather stereotypically, ie: groupies as girls that followed bands around and liked to try and do...um..."favors" for band members; boardies as internet forum members, fan girls as tweens who plaster band/band member posters all over their wall and squeal at the sight of said band member.
But, I think nowadays the lines have blurred and the terms can be interchangable. I think a groupie can be anyone who devoutly follows a band around (like Phish or Grateful Dead fans...and several of the kmb faithful ) and isn't necessarily after sex; groupies can be boardies (and vice versa), and I think all of us on this forum, regardless of age, have had our fan girl/boy moments! Of course, that being said, I think a lot of it depends on the person though, because I think in some cases the terms can still be seperate (if that makes sense); like some people would probably only consider themselves boardies, etc.

Re: re: boardies, groupies, fangirls/boys and technology
Yes, I think the terms have probably changed over the years. When my 37-year-old brother calls me a groupie, he's definitely trying to wind me up with stalkery connotations. Anyone can see I spend way too much time here to do any serious following.
Thanks to the fabulous Liyana. Avi by Malena. Equally fab.

No to me groupie still means someone who is after sex.

Making out? I'm not jealous at all.
I think "groupie" is a dead word.

I agree with cowpie21. And if groupie always refers to someone with sexual intentions, then we need a new word for people who follow bands but would never behave sluttishly. If I had the means and opportunity, I would definitely be in the latter category. :)

And you and I can be co-founders. lol :P No really, how about "Broupies/Broupians"? Boardies/groupies/fans that wouldn't resort to the sexual side of it all. Not very original, but whatever. :P

Re: re: boardies, groupies, fangirls/boys and technology
In my opinion "groupie" was embraced during '70s. It was a part of music culture. Morals in music scene have changed, and now media and music companies feed on us with stupid gossips, rather limiting our imaginations. You will find many obsessed stupid fans who are manipulated with their tactics - to follow celebrities / trends, rather than music itself.
What am I saying?

Lol!! I keep trying to come up with objections to this term because of all its negative connotations, but it fits too well!

i was using a more gender/sexual neutral term before like 'keane enthusiast' but it doesn't have that bite like boardie/groupie/fangirl and sounds a a bit 'posh' and prissy. lol. broadies/broadians/broapian are cute names. reminds me of a roadie but that's something different but it soudns like you are part of the band and the music in some way just like a roadie is. hmmm..
