Keane's drum tech Scott Johnson killed in Radiohead stage accident in Toronto

So sad to learn that the one person who was killed in that stage collapse accident in Toronto before the Radiohead concert was Scott, who worked so many years for Keane. A familiar face setting up the technics on stage before a show. My heartfealt condolences to his family and all his friends and the band. I thought, as he was working for Keane "live", I open a thread here.

A man killed after a stage collapsed ahead of a Radiohead concert, in the Canadian city of Toronto, has been named as Scott Johnson, a drum technician from South Yorkshire.

A relative confirmed the death of the 33-year-old, from Doncaster, who also worked for the another British band, Keane
    .

Police in Toronto say the stage was being set up on Saturday when the top portion collapsed on top of him.

    Three other people were injured.

The band was not on stage at the time and the sell-out concert was cancelled. Investigations into the cause of the incident are continuing.

Of the others hurt in the incident at Downsview Park, one was injured seriously, medical officials said.

The collapse happened an hour before the gates were due to open for the concert, with queues already beginning to form outside.

UK rock band Radiohead tweeted the performance had been cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Emergency crews went to the scene and the area was evacuated.

    'Like a car accident'
Toronto police said the stage collapsed at 16:00 local time (20:00).

The Radiohead gig was a sell-out
The victims were all part of a team involved with setting up the stage, officials said.

Alexandra Halbert, who was working in a beer tent at the show, said she was about 200-300 yards away from the stage, with her back to it, when she heard "something that sounded like fireworks".

"I turned around and the whole top part of the stage had collapsed, as well as the scaffolding," she told the BBC.

"It seemed like there were a couple of minutes of hesitation and no one knew quite what to do. It was only afterwards that we all realised how serious it was."

Jason Ip, a food vendor, said there was "chaos" as people waited for the emergency services to arrive.

"A few people started running towards the stage. No one knew exactly what had happened, but it was clear that people were underneath the stage," he said.

"It was like witnessing a car accident. In a situation like that, you just aren't sure how to react."

Some 40,000 people were expected for the sold-out gig, which was also due to feature Canadian musician Caribou.

So sad to hear this. =( No offence to the other roadies but Scott was the nicest of them all, I really liked him, he was always ready to throw us those used drumsticks and setlists. He will be missed for sure!

A rare visit here to add my sorrow at Scott's untimely demise. Remember him so well from early Keane shows in both the UK and US when he was always so very friendly - especially once he found out that I live in Doncaster (where he was from) too.

R.I.P. Scott - you will be very sadly missed.

My deepest condolences to Scott's family and friends.

It was too soon for him to go.

So very sad.  Seen Scott at many a Keane gig as I watched the crew set up.  Remember him miking up the timpani on a Perfect Symmetry video.  Condolences to his friends, family & to the band.  RIP Scott
