This thread shall be re-named Tom's singing skills Just good or "the best of the best"???, I suppose.

When I first heard Keane on the radio back in 2004, I almost crashed my car because Tom's voice was so beautiful. Immediately I thought it must have been a new single from Travis, because Fran Healy has a similar vocal style. Tom's voice is much more expressive and tender..He is my favorite male vocalist. Tom's voice is perfectly suited for Tim's songs.. They are so lucky to have each other!

One thing I am wondering...does anyone notice a difference in Tom's voice due to his cigarette habit?

Tom's voice had an immediate impact on you then cherry keane!

diligentwolf - Queen were my favourite band for a long long time before Keane and I never thought any band would top them but there is just something about Tom's voice that hypnotises me like no other singer whatever style song he sings, his voice just does it for me in a nutshell!

Well Tom's voice is pretty special and in my opinion he is one of the greatest singers of our time. It's his voice that makes Keane so special for me. It'll be interesting to see how he evolves as a singer, I think he's gotten so much better already (if you compare the early stuff and PS). He is still rather young and most singers get better with age. I'd say we still haven't heard the best from Mr Chaplin.

That's when you know you've found somebody really special, you can just shut the *** up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence.

When I first saw Keane live Tom's voice completely blew me off my feet. I think he IS the best of the best. Before I first saw Keane live I used to think Morten Harket (A-ha) was the best singer but Tom's voice has got sooo much more power and it shows that he really puts his heart and soul into singing the songs instead of just trying to sing 'perfectly'. And if that means he occassionally sings a little off key that's o.k.. I think singing passionately is way more important than never hitting a bad note. Tom's singing touches me, like many of you said before, it lifts me up, makes me feel butterflies, goosepimples or just gives me an incredible high.

I will be leaving this band if he stop developing as a singer.

I want to see how better he can be as a singer than he is now...but I am not sure about the age.

I hate to bring up this issue but do you think he is...a little bit old for all the expectations?

I, too, have thought about this and I can only come up with what's been said "good, but not the best out there." (Possibly the best vocal in my collection, but I can't speak for an expansive one.)   He's certainly got something, though!

With that said, I think Keane's music has a great deal of how I became fascinated and why I enjoy their music so much.:)  The first time I heard SOWK was on a Victoria's Secret commercial, and you can only hear Tom's vocals at the very end.  The instrumental work is what caught my attention at first.  Actually hearing the whole song and others later did solidify my liking them.

I've been hearing a lot about how Tom can do very well on his own, and that's true!  But it's not the same without all of their input.:D

I won't say he is the best, but he's definitley one of the best Wink

The only one I can think of right now that might win over Tom would be Mr. Mercury <3

But... Tom's voice is very speciall and beautiful and gaaah. I love his voice <3

I think I'll put it this way. He's got the best voice of all the living male vocalists Wink

Well I think many talented singers (can) reach thier prime during their 20s and quite a lot of singers say thery are afraid of getting old, such as becoming not able to hit high notes or something. (but hitting high notes isn't that important IMO, I hate those screaming singers.)

Actually I am almost same age as Tom (lol so I am a little bit old too) I might be paranoid. Anyway good to know that life starts from 30...!Wink

He has a beautiful voice and a great singing style, which is a huge part of why I love Keane.

Also, he is hands down one of THE absolute best LIVE singers out there. Everytime I see them live I am truly in awe of how brilliantly and effortlessly he sings live while being so energetic and running around and such. And in the quiet songs, he just nails it. To me it is very very close to perfection.

As for 'technical perfection'.... if I wanted to see a choir I would go see a choir. But I don't, I go to see a great live band rock out. A concert doesn't have to be perfectly polished. It is all about the emotions you bring across. And Tom is a master at that.

Queen are absolutely brilliant too....  but I would not say Freddie Mercury was always perfect in his live singing. Does it matter? Not to me. Again, it is about more than that. The ability to give someone chills.

I don't expect you to agree though, each to their own Smile

And last but not least, in my personal opinion I think Tom's voice is stronger now then it ever was before, when I compare it to older footage.

"But I think seriously that he has not enough level to be called "the best male voice in UK""

I have to agree with you on that. Because, according to Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Lee Ryan has the best male voice in the UK.

    HO HO HO. FELIZ NAVIDAD.

Tom is definitely one of the best. With the past 4 years he has developed so much, if you listen to the older videos from 2004. You must listen to the christmas version 'You don't see me' which is technically pretty good. And 'Under Pressure' is totally awesome, the way he changes from his mainvoice to the neutral voice or to the 'belting' style shows that he really is one of the best. And Tom doesn't have any vibrato, which makes his voice so pure and his diction is so clear.  And in live you don't have to sing everything pitch-perfectly and at the same time make the audience go wild. Although, I must say that it was painful to listen to CB live earlier. He sang the high-notes on his throat, but he has given up this bad habit too, so..technically to me, one of the best ones.

i do think he has the best voice- hear me out

i am a complete stickler for music having true emotion in it-- there are many talented musicians globally but if feeling is not in it i really can't regard this as quality music.

thats what drew me to keane-- the raw, pure voice of tom-- it left/leaves me speechless and i regard the music/his voice as perfect in that respect (which is all i care about) :)

Re: Tom's voice Just good or "the best of the best"???

I believe the greatest singers are both technically skilled and are able to have a strong emotional effect on people listening.  Tom possesses both of these qualities, as Freddy Mercury did.  I personally feel Tom Chaplin is undoubtedly one of the greatest, if not the greatest, male vocalist in pop music today.  His voice has such a rare combination of beauty and power.  Freddy Mercury, in my opinion, is the only other male vocalist that could compare with Tom.  Some may feel that Tom lacks the "technical" skills to be called the greatest singer in the UK or anywhere else but one thing that he does have is the ability to touch people's hearts with his amazing voice.  The best music inspires an emotional reaction in people and Tom's voice alone does that for me, no matter what he is singing.

In this pitchfork.com review of 'Brighton, England's The Diogenes Club, 'Do You Know How To Feel It' ' the reviewer remarks 'the occasional falsetto clearly owes a debt to Tom Chaplin of Keane...'

I hear what they're saying, but for me this serves to highlight the vast difference between just a pleasant (and forgettable) singer (The Diogenes Club) and a truly great singer (Tom of course)...

Now I will give my opinion...

well Tommy's voice is simply amazing, for me he is the greatest singer of his generation. I´m A-ha fan exactly 21 years and  for me Morten Harket (singer of band A-ha) is still the greatest singer in the world.

Re: Tom's voice Just good or "the best of the best"???

While Tom's voice may not be technically "perfect" (He has some breathing issues that I've noticed among other things, but they've gotten much better through the years, and honestly, is it even possible to have a "perfect" voice?) I seriously think it is one of the most beautiful and powerful voices I have ever heard. My brother (who has perfect pitch and is an extreme choir nerd) has even told me multiple times that he wants Tom's voice. :)
And while he may not have the best voice EVER (although I am having a really hard time coming up with someone who is miles ahead of Tom) he sure is better than a vast majority of vocalists out there on the pop/rock scene...even Freddy Mercury, who has come up previously in this topic, I think doesn't achieve the warmth and beauty, or the strength in the upper register that Tom does. Also I'm not really a fan of Freddy's vibrato :(
For me as well, it was Tom's voice that initially attracted me to Keane.

Also, it could be said that there are a lot of vocalists who could be considered the "best of the best" who capture their own style, and are "different" rather than better... for example, James Hetfield of Metallica and Michael Buble can't really be compared with each other, but are each regarded very highly within their vocal style. So I guess my answer, is that for me, he is not necessarily the absolute "best of the best" but "clearly well placed among the best" or something to that effect...

    :)
